Paid vs. Organic Strategies
Have you ever thought, "Should I pay for that ad promo or 'boost' this post?" If so, you're not alone. Many realtors and small business owners don't know when, or how, to invest money in paid marketing. In this blog, I'm going to give you a simple guide to deciding what's best for you: paid advertising, organic growth, or a mix of both.
What Is SEO and SEM?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It helps you bring organic (unpaid) traffic to your website. SEO relies on a number of factors that help a web page rank higher on the SERP (search engine results page), including your content, your site's technical health, and links from other websites.
When you're working on your SEO, your website should be optimized for your target audience. To do that, think about what your ideal client is actually typing into Google. A homebuyer might search "homes for sale in Tulsa," while someone looking for a local bakery might search "custom birthday cakes near me." When you build pages and blog posts around those searches, you show up at the moment people need you.
SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, and it's the paid side of search. You encounter SEM whenever you search on Google and see results labeled "Sponsored." Those businesses paid money to be seen. Advertisers bid on keywords, and many choose long-tail keywords, which are longer, more specific phrases like "3-bedroom homes with a pool in Broken Arrow."
The Pros and Cons of Organic Strategies
Organic marketing includes SEO, blogging, social media posts, and your Google Business Profile.
Pros:
It costs your time, not your ad budget.
Results build over time and keep working after the effort is done.
Being specific helps. Targeting long-tail keywords with less competition can bring results faster.
Cons:
It's slow. SEO usually takes three to six months to show measurable results, and six to 12 months in competitive industries.
New websites take even longer. A brand-new site may need six to 12 months to build authority.
Some real estate keywords are especially tough. Terms like "mortgage lender" put you up against big companies with large SEO budgets.
It's never finished. SEO is an ongoing process, not a one-time project.
The Pros and Cons of Paid Strategies
Paid marketing includes Google Ads, boosted posts, and Facebook and Instagram ads.
Pros:
It's fast. Most Google ads are reviewed within one business day and can start running once approved.
It's measurable. You can see how many clicks, calls, or leads your money brought in.
You can choose who sees your ads and where.
Cons:
It costs money, and results stop when you stop paying.
Budget can be wasted quickly if your ads aren't set up correctly.
It requires planning. If you need an ad live by a certain date, like an open house, Google recommends submitting it several days early.
How to Decide What's Right for You
Start by asking yourself three questions:
What's my budget? If money is tight, organic should be your foundation.
How fast do I need results? Paid ads work quickly; organic works slowly but lasts.
What's my goal? Brand awareness, leads, or sales for a specific promotion?
For realtors: Use organic content to build your reputation as the local expert. Post neighborhood guides, market updates, and client success stories. Save your paid budget for time-sensitive moments like open houses, new listings, and price drops.
For small business owners: Keep your Google Business Profile updated and ask happy customers for reviews. Use paid ads for product launches, seasonal sales, and holiday promotions.
The Best Answer? Use Both
Paid and organic work best as a team. SEO doesn't work like paid ads that you can turn on and off, so if you need results right away, pairing SEO with Google Ads can fill the gap while your organic presence grows.
Post organically and pay attention to which content gets the most engagement. Then put your ad dollars behind the posts that are already working. If you're new to paid ads, start small, test, and adjust before you spend big.
